Life in a city is full of events and actions. There’s something or the other happening all over the city that keeps you entertained day in and day out. …Or rather there have been things created to keep you entertained all the while …. So what would you do if you are a poor reader and there’s no TV around …what are the ways you’ll keep yourself entertained …well I guess that’s how radio got invented …well I agree in the west radio played a huge role in both the world wars and in India radio was a huge source of news when it came to the Indian world cup victory 1983. …But go back in the 1990’s radio went into hibernation as if it was the coldest winter it ever had. But the sun rose from the east. Came 2000 and the 1st five years have seen a huge boom in the radio industry.
All the media houses leveraged into big radio stations, 1st in the race TIMES OF INDIA initiating Radio Mirchi, which is said to be the most heard radio station in the country. Then there were a host of other players coming in the latest one being Hindustan times in association with Virgin Radio FEVER FM an instant hit amongst the biggest metros for the reason it plays the most music!! Some facts on the industry India’s radio industry is projected to post a robust growth of 32 per cent over the next few years to touch Rs.12 billion in revenues by 2010 and 338 FM radio licenses for bidding for the private players, that’s enormous!!!
I’ve been really excited with the present radio scene so I decided to do a small survey amongst people on why they think radio is picked up so much the answers I got were amusing too. Some of my friends Kunal, Angika, Shivangi and Rahul said that “RJ’s play a very crucial role in a radio station its up to them to keep the viewers glued to one channel and off course radio is known for music as well so both come together to make a deadly combination, while in the past government radio AIR played real old songs therefore it so boring, new radio stations play fresh music and make the environment exciting”. Another friend of mine Pranshu had this really interesting thought he said “ Radio is LIVE, its happening and its at your face, you can quite relate to it and its mentally un-taxing” yes that’s a big reason for the success of radio
My perception goes this way. I quite agree to what Pranshu said, with Television becoming boring, its quite become impossible to watch TV at night, radio is a huge option to connect, yes its live and you don’t have to remember anything like what happened in the previous episode, what will happen next also with a vast penetration of radio in mobile phones radio is a the best travel buster. Just put it on and a one-hour journey sings and rhymes with you. Also very clever of the radio makers to keep so many contests and sneakers like JAM BUSTERS, things like KAMLA ka HAMLA which add to the overall facet of a radio channel. Radio is growing and here to stay to become a integral part of our lives… tune in and as they say BAJAATE RAHO !!
first of all, the purpose for which the radio being invented had almost vanished…..it has become more commercialized…bt leave it
I really liked these lines very much….
“yes its live and you don’t have to remember anything like what happened in the previous episode, what will happen next also with a vast penetration of radio in mobile phones radio is a the best travel buster”
I appreciate these lines “Radio is LIVE, its happening and its at your face, you can quite relate to it and its mentally un-taxing” yes that’s a big reason for the success of radio”
but dont u think the success of radio is something like the success of “maruti 800″…
can we quote radio as “common men’s’ IPOD”
I beg to differ with D. If it was the common mans ipod then why would they have a radio in every lil mp3 player. If the common man is lookin for an ipod and cant afford one he can happily buy cheaper mp3 players or simply an ipod imitation. Ofcourse the radio is popular for the music it plays not stop but so do many tv channels and so does your mp3 player. where radio has an edge over them is its human element. u have real people talkin about really nothin at all and even then it makes a lotta sense and u feel alive and part of somethin. radio gives u the feelin of being alone and still part of somethin and its always there for you. you surely can load your fave tracks on your mp3 player…one track playin after the other…the radio creates a dialogue between the station and the listener…video killed the radio star is an old song now…radio is back and here to stay! ppl will buy mp3 players and listening to the radio will be one of its important functions.
bt dear pranshu..tell me one thing do u feel the same (wht u r saying) when u listen to radio? forget these philosophical jargons…think wht do u feel…n why do u prefer radio over an mp3 or an ipod
dude, i’d suggest u go thru my comment once again…yeah..thts it!
well, not here to have an argument…u expressed your opinion and quite well at that, I appreciate the simplicity and straightforwardness of the article and an “article” it definitely is. If you write more like this you could probably end up writing for a periodical and making some money, which definitely will appeal to the entrepreneur in you.
The best thing I found about the article is that the language used is very simple… You have not used high fundoo words…. Also It is your perspective and it is not trying to convince a reader…. I think because of that it cuts across to a wide audience… Can be easily understood by one and all… so you should expect a lot of people reading it….
After reading this article it left a thought in my mind… I mean, how integral is entertainment in our lives??? I mean you can look at it as a means of communication or substitute for an MP3 player or a disc man or television or whatever other forms of communications are… But eventually they are forms of entertainment….
I strongly feel, especially in metro cities, when people dont have time, and are always on a run, they need some kinda interaction, which according to me, the radio fulfills. Even though it is one sided, where the RJ does all the talking the listener is intrigued. We listen to their views, reviews and gossip and are entertained. I hope you’ll have been able understand what i mean..
any ways i would sum it up by just saying that it is a brilliant article.. Keep Writing…
Okay, I was going to comment. But then I realised that I better make it a post. Had too much to say!, so here’s the individual link –

And yes, a very well written post indeed. Keep up the good work.
And I presume that the picture adjacent to the Mac section was intentionally chosen? I like the subtlety.
